Growing up, whenever I was trying to escape a punishment by using some far fetched technicality, my dad would say “your trying to split hairs and it is not working”. Shortly thereafter came the punishment that fit my crime.

Now there is a new hair debate in my life. I like short hair that requires no attention in the morning on my way out the door. My wife likes my hair long enough to allow my natural curls to make an appearance.

At Highpoint there are situations, almost weekly, that something may technically qualify and meet code, but going a little higher and farther makes a huge difference.

For example, we are currently framing the ceiling and roofline on a house. The living room will have a vaulted ceiling, and technically, it is right on the line that a 2×4 wall will suffice. However, stepping up to a 2×6 wall is going to cost less than $100 and ensures that our end product will last a lifetime.

I have learned that splitting hairs and trying to cut corners is not worth the effort it takes. Going above and beyond, on the other hand, leaves everyone happy and creates a product I can be proud of and owners are happy to own.
